Join Us at the Annual Walk to Cure Diabetes

The 2012 Walk to Cure Diabetes will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, Conn. We are also excited to announce our new Walk at the Ridgefield Recreation Center in Ridgefield, Conn., on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m.

The 2012 Walks are gearing up to be the best ever! This annual event brings families, schools, local businesses and corporations together to share in the camaraderie of the day and to raise money for diabetes research. There will be food, music, entertainment, a giant slide, an obstacle course and several activities like face painting, hair painting, mini zumba classes and pick-up soccer games. Come down and spend the day at one of our Walk to Cure Diabetes locations, there will be lots to do for all ages!

Walk Family of the Year—the Story Family
Ryan, Laura, Katie, Robin and Kelvin

The Chapter is proud to announce that Mark Tierney and Nestle Waters North America will be the Corporate Honoree for the Walk this year. Mark’s association with JDRF started soon after his daughter Julia, now age 13, was diagnosed a few months before her 3rd birthday. He started his family walk team in 2002 while living in Southlake, Texas, and soon after he joined the JDRF Fort Worth chapter for a short time prior to relocating back to the Metro New York area. Mark and his family have been living in Ridgefield, Conn., since 2004. While in Connecticut they have continued to support JDRF with their family walk team—"Julia's Angels." Additionally, Mark's company, Nestle Waters North America, has supported JDRF through a yearly sponsorship along with water donations for our events. He is a current Board member with the Fairfield County Chapter and has helped serve on the finance, golf and corporate recruitment committees.

New this year, the Chapter will present the 2012 Honored Family award to the Story family for their unwavering support of the JDRF Fairfield County Chapter and dedication to the Walk to Cure Diabetes. The Story family has participated in the Walk for the past nine years and has been an integral part of the Executive Board, Walk Committee, JDRF Advocacy and one of the Walk’s top family fundraising teams — Team Ryan. Ryan Story, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9, commented, “JDRF gives me that opportunity to form a true team, 100 percent with me to walk step for step for a cure. Team Ryan has given me way more than just blue balloons and T-shirts. It gives me an opportunity to share the awareness and spread the cause further than I could have imagined it to be. I thank JDRF for the honor of selecting my family and team for recognition and accept it graciously with every intent to continue … until we have a cure."
