The main responsibility of the Walk Ambassadors is to “put a face on diabetes”
and help educate the public about diabetes and why it is so important that
JDRF accomplishes its mission to find a cure for diabetes and its complications
through
the support of research. Walk ambassadors have several important responsibilities
and play many roles throughout Walk season. These children are passionate
about finding a cure for diabetes. This year there are two ambassadors:
Samantha Daniels
and Billy Morales.
Samantha Daniels is 12 years old and lives in Glendale,
Calif. She likes to play soccer, knit, shop, go camping and hang out
with her friends. Samantha
was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 10 years old. She enjoys educating
others about carb counting and diabetes and hopes to someday be a diabetes
educator. This will be Samantha’s second Walk. In the past year, Samantha’s
team – Smantha’s
Soldiers –
has raised more than $5,400. She hopes there will soon be a cure thanks
to the increased awareness and research efforts in diabetes.
Billy Morales is 12 years old and lives in Arcadia, Calif., with his parents. Billy loves
to play baseball, soccer and the drums. Although Billy has
adjusted to the many challenges of having diabetes, he looks forward
to the day when
there can be relief and normality for all those living with type 1 diabetes.
For the last two years, his team, “Billy’s Diabetes Exterminators,” has
been raising funds for the JDRF and will continue to do so until the
disease is conquered.
Billy’s openness about his diabetes has created awareness among his peers
and their families that will hopefully accelerate finding a cure.
