Outreach Expands
|
Untitled Document
"We knew there must be families out there like ours, and we were amazed at how many families and type 1 kids showed up at the swim party!" said Laurie Deshyrver, president of the newly formed Tri Counties Council (TCC) of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Opbispo counties. "There were more than 100 people at the first event!"
The TCC is one example of JDRF LA's efforts to expand outreach and serve the diabetes community. Courtney Kanner, JDRF LA outreach manager, is working with clinicians, educators, social workers and others to get the word out on the JDRF Family Network and its free services. "We want to be the next call after diagnosis," says Courtney, "so we can immediately begin helping connect people and offer peer support, resources and fun opportunities." In just three years, the Family Network has grown from 30 to 500 families, with local councils in Pasadena and the South Bay and new councils forming in the Valley and West LA areas. A new Peer Support (formerly Mentor) Program connects newly diagnosed families with those experienced living with diabetes.
JDRF LA Outreach and Family Network have been supported by the Joseph Drown, Wilson Family and Disney Foundations, along with many amazing volunteers.
