When Cathy Hughes entered St. Teresa’s
in 1958, she and a number of other incoming freshmen began a lifelong love
affair with the school. Nearly 50 years later, Hughes’ love for STA is just
as strong.

As had her mother before her (Catherine Kilty Hughes, class of 1932), Cathy
passed her love of the Academy on to her daughters. As an employee of the
school from 1977-79, Cathy would often bring her daughter, Ellen, to campus.
Later,
as a stay-at-home mom, Cathy continued to volunteer at the school and would
bring along her other daughter, Catherine, who would go on to graduate
from STA in 1998.
Cathy and her husband, John Marx, a former chair of the
STA board of directors, continue to be a presence and symbol of the deep
devotion that thousands
have for the school. Besides a named scholarship in memory of their daughter,
Ellen,
Cathy and John recently left a portion of their estate to the STA Expanding
Universes endowment campaign in their wills.
“The time spent at St. Teresa’s,
for my mother, myself and my daughter, was a defining moment in all our
lives,” says Cathy. “It was at that
time, with
the help of the sisters and my classmates, that my view of myself and
the world was truly formed. Through this legacy gift, it is my family’s
desire
to help
generations of other young women acquire this same life-affirming experience.”
If you haven’t done so already, please let STA know if you have added the
school to your estate planning so that we might recognize your
gift. For
