‘Best of STA’ Honor First Scholarship Recipient
St. Teresa’s Academy began a tradition in 1949 that continues to this day.
Every spring for the past 57 years, the announcement of which senior will
be named Academy Woman is one of the most anticipated and special moments
of the
school year.

This student, nominated and selected by a vote of students, faculty and staff,
is noted for her “moral character, leadership, sense of responsibility,
loyalty to STA, school spirit, service to others, sportsmanship, cooperation,
helpfulness
and ability to command.”
In 2006, many of the current 57 Academy Women, their friends, family and
other alumnae pooled more than $20,000 in contributions to create the
Academy Woman Scholarship Fund. Interest from this invested fund provides
an annual
scholarship to a sophomore or junior that Administration believes embodies
some or all of the qualities expected of an Academy Woman.
The inaugural Academy Woman Scholarship was awarded to Junior Amanda
Morrall. “I am proud to be the first to receive this new scholarship
begun by women
who are considered the best of STA,” Amanda said. The scholarship was
presented by Denise McNerney, a graduate and Academy Woman in 1971.
“Receiving the Academy Woman award was amazing for me, as it represented
all the wonderful and rich experiences I had gained during my four
years at STA,” Denise recalled. “I believe the foundation built during
those
years has truly served me well. Giving to this endowed fund, and
being honored to
give
it to a student for the first time, brought back many wonderful memories.
I wish Amanda and all future Academy Women Scholarship recipients
the best, both
in their years at STA as well as in their life journeys.”
